The race for the White House is on a razor’s edge as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump remain tied in the final stretch of the 2024 presidential campaign. According to a recent CNN poll conducted by SSRS, both candidates have secured 47% of likely voters’ support, indicating a highly competitive race.
The poll, conducted just days before Election Day, highlights the tight battle between Harris and Trump as voters prepare to cast their ballots.
Polling Trends and Voter Commitment
Throughout the campaign, polling has shown a consistent deadlock between the two candidates. In September, Harris led Trump by a narrow margin of 48% to 47%.
A poll conducted over the summer, after President Joe Biden announced his decision to step down and endorse Harris, showed Trump with a slight advantage, garnering 49% of support from registered voters compared to Harris’s 46%.
One of the most notable findings of the latest poll is the high level of voter commitment. The poll reveals that 85% of likely voters who have already made a decision say they have known which party they would support from the start.
Only 15% of voters reported changing their minds throughout the campaign, and currently, just 2% of likely voters remain undecided.
The poll also shows that 9% of likely voters could still change their choice before casting their ballots. These voters are more inclined to support Trump, with 38% leaning towards the former president, compared to 31% for Harris and 30% for third-party candidates.
However, this group of potential swing voters is less motivated to vote overall, with only 27% of them reporting they are “extremely motivated” to vote compared to 70% of voters who have already made up their minds.
Early Voting and Final Stretch
Harris appears to have the advantage when it comes to early voting. The poll indicates that 20% of likely voters have already cast their ballots, with 61% of them supporting Harris and 36% backing Trump.
This reflects the Democrats’ higher propensity to vote early or by mail. However, those who have yet to vote seem to lean in Trump’s favor, with 50% of undecided voters backing him compared to 44% supporting Harris.
With early voting well underway, the final days of the campaign will be critical in determining the outcome. Both candidates are focused on mobilizing their base and winning over any remaining undecided voters.
Harris has been emphasizing key Democratic issues such as reproductive rights and healthcare, while Trump continues to focus on economic concerns, immigration, and his promise to bring stability to the country.
As the race remains deadlocked, both campaigns are preparing for a tight finish that could come down to a small number of swing states. With Election Day just around the corner, the country is bracing for a close and highly contested result.
