Tyler Boebert, the eldest son of Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), recently pleaded guilty to charges related to identity theft after being caught using stolen credit cards for shopping sprees.
According to reports from Courthouse News, Tyler admitted to one charge of attempting to commit identity theft following incidents where he and three underage friends were seen on surveillance cameras stealing credit cards from people’s cars in Rifle, Colorado, and using them for unauthorized purchases.
Authorities reported that Tyler Boebert, who had previously told the judge he was “working things out” to afford an attorney, was seen on video alongside his friends breaking into cars, taking any credit cards they found, and then going on shopping sprees.
In court, Tyler Boebert faced sentencing with no prior criminal record, and Ninth Judicial District Chief Judge John Neiley took this into account when delivering his sentence.
Judge Neiley said, “I don’t know a lot about you, but I know you are a young man. You were 18 when you committed this offense. You have no prior criminal history, and this is an opportunity you should not squander.”
When considering the plea deal, Judge Neiley reviewed letters from Tyler’s parents, Lauren and Jason Boebert, as well as from the mother of Tyler’s child.
The judge ultimately issued a deferred sentence for Tyler, who is now 19, requiring him to complete 80 hours of community service and abstain from controlled substances.
Tyler Boebert accepted responsibility and expressed a desire to successfully complete his probation and move forward.
Lauren Boebert attended the hearing to support her son. According to Courthouse News, she appeared in court with her grandson.
Tyler’s defense attorney, William Trent Palmer, commented, “Mr. Boebert’s family is in the courtroom. His primary focus is his family, and this agreement allows him to move forward and hopefully not have anything on his record.”
Tyler Boebert’s case has drawn significant public attention, not only because of his connection to a prominent political figure but also due to the nature of his charges.
The fact that he was caught in the act on surveillance cameras added drama to the story, making it a notable incident in the community.
Lauren Boebert, a well-known congresswoman with strong and outspoken views, will undoubtedly face questions about parenting in light of this case.
However, by attending the court session and writing to the judge, she showed her support for her son.
In the end, Tyler has been given a chance to make amends for his mistakes. With a deferred sentence and community service, he has an opportunity to demonstrate that he has learned from this experience.
The community will be watching, and time will tell if Tyler can seize this chance to build a better future.
