Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban revealed on Monday that he had proposed arranging a live X (formerly Twitter) interview between Vice President Kamala Harris and fellow billionaire Elon Musk.
Cuban, speaking during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” shared that the idea was met with resistance from Harris’ campaign team.
“Not Kamala specifically but her team … didn’t trust the fact that he [Musk] wouldn’t go on X and just say something to distort the purpose of the meeting,” Cuban explained to host Andrew Ross Sorkin.
Cuban, who has become a vocal supporter of Harris during the final stretch of her campaign, had pitched the idea of the two high-profile figures having a direct conversation on X.
When Sorkin expressed interest in seeing Harris engage with Musk on the platform, Cuban elaborated on the campaign’s concerns.
Following his CNBC appearance, Cuban took to X to clarify his comments, admitting that he could have chosen his words more carefully.
In a post on X, Cuban said he should have used the word “disclosure” instead of distortion.
His clarification aimed to soften the suggestion that Musk would intentionally skew the conversation, emphasizing instead the campaign’s wariness about the unpredictable nature of live interviews on social media.
Elon Musk, never one to shy away from engaging in public dialogue on his platform, quickly responded to Cuban’s comments.
Musk said on X in response to a clip of the interview that there would be no “distortion” if it was a live interview, adding that an interview with Harris “would be so awesome.”
Musk’s enthusiasm for the idea was evident as he followed up with a lighthearted plea: “Please can we do this. Pretty please,” accompanied by the praying hands emoji.
Despite Musk’s openness to the interview, the Harris campaign has yet to respond to the invitation, leaving many to speculate on whether such an event could materialize.
The hesitation isn’t entirely surprising given Musk’s close alignment with former President Donald Trump, who he has openly supported through political action committees.
Musk has also campaigned for Trump in key battleground states like Pennsylvania, a point that likely complicates the idea of a Harris-Musk interview.
Musk’s involvement in the current election cycle extends beyond just campaigning for Trump.
On Sunday, he announced a controversial $1 million daily giveaway for those who sign an online petition supporting the U.S. Constitution.
The legality of such a sweepstakes has already been called into question, adding another layer of intrigue to Musk’s high-profile political activity leading up to Election Day.
While Musk has hosted political figures on X before, including a much-publicized interview with Trump and the chaotic launch of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ presidential primary bid, Harris’ campaign appears to be taking a more cautious approach.
Both Musk-hosted events were marked by significant technical difficulties, though they still attracted millions of listeners.
Given Musk’s strong ties to Trump, the Harris campaign’s reluctance to participate in a live X interview seems understandable.
During the CNBC interview, Cuban remained optimistic about the potential for a relationship between Harris and Musk, should Harris win the presidency in November.
When asked if such a relationship was possible, Cuban responded with an emphatic “100 percent yes,” adding, “I’ve had that conversation.”
His confidence suggests that he believes common ground can be found, despite the differences in their political and business approaches.
Cuban has become an increasingly outspoken supporter of Harris, frequently appearing on various media outlets to promote her policies, especially on economic issues.
He has used his platform to argue that Harris is the right choice for addressing the country’s financial challenges, positioning her as a leader capable of bringing change to the economy.
As the election draws nearer, the prospect of a live X interview between Harris and Musk remains up in the air.
While Cuban has expressed his belief that the two could forge a relationship, the tension between Musk’s support for Trump and Harris’ presidential ambitions continues to cast doubt on whether such a meeting would happen.
For now, it seems both sides remain cautious, leaving the potential for a Musk-Harris dialogue unresolved.
With the campaign entering its final weeks, the outcome of this election will likely determine whether a future collaboration or conversation between Harris and Musk could take place.
In the meantime, Cuban’s efforts to bridge the gap between the two billionaires highlights the growing intersection of politics, business, and technology in today’s political landscape.
Whether or not they ever meet for that live X interview, the idea itself has sparked considerable interest and debate.
